“I’ve been to Dutchman’s Landing many times over the past few decades. I was excited when they broke ground on putting in EV charging. My wife and I took a drive down to check it out. All four spots were open. It was a cold winter day. The chargers are nice looking and include a QR code to download the app which is needed to use the charger. All four chargers are J1772 and 11.5kWh. A typical level 2 charger. Reading the charger’s screen I wasn’t sure if the price was $1.00 for an hour or a kW. I was here to test this charger so I took a pic of the QR code and downloaded the ViaLynk app. They do a monthly billing for what you use or when you reach $25 (whichever first). That all sounded alright to me. At first glance it looks like a big display but when you get close you see that the display is only a few inches but designed to look larger. I didn’t like how small the text was and how difficult it was to figure out what I was going to pay. Take a look at the photo I took of the Charger Screen and the app photos. The screen says; Idle: $0.00 / Min. Price: $1.00 /Min Total Price / KWh: $21.00 /3.9745 The app clearly said $1.00 per kWh. After the charge I went into the app under “Payment Info & History” it says “Outstanding Balance $4.00. If the price really is $1.00 per kWh…it's totally crazy. It would cost $85 to fully charge my EV. That works out to over $1 per 4 miles of driving. There should be a large warning sign on this charger. “ONLY USE IN AN EMERGENCY.” Why is it so expensive? Is it ViaLynk or the town of Catskill? I emailed Catskill to check on this. Since these chargers are in a town park I would think the town has something to say about pricing. I emailed the town about this and here is their answer; The Village sets the cost per KWH. As per the Villages charges to date we are close to what Central Hudson’s fees are to us. They have a program that we applied for to get rebates on the per KWH charges and we would receive that every 6 months. Until Central Hudson either tells us the KWH difference or we get the rebate we have to make sure we at least cover the cost of the electric and fees associated with providing the EV chargers. It was great to get a response to my inquiry. I don’t understand how Catskill could be paying close to this when everyone else is so much cheaper.” — Bill, a year ago
