“A friend of mine retrofitted an old Pagoda with an EV kit. I had seen this car in an old film when I was young, where two young lovers are driving along the famous Caspian coastline from Chalus to Ramsar, hands clasped together near the shifter, and I, still in the warm embrace of youth and optimism that maybe one day such an experience would be ahead of me, looked on with bright eyes. Two and a half decades later, I stood alone and with a gracious smile on my face as my buddy handed me the keys to take his beloved Pagoda from the coast to Texas — where he was moving with his family. With nothing better to do; there I was, a nobody half way between nowhere and no place on heading towards the back end of Texas with this battery perpetually beeping that it needed a charge. (It has a 350km/230mile range.) As I drove through Virginia and Tennessee, some part of me suddenly realized why other countries call the US third-world; Americans truly are deluded when they think they are the most advanced nation in the world, but this thought dissipated as I drove into Texas, which was ironically the state I had been most biased against. Yet the struggle to find a working charger remained top of mind, this was a welcome change from the well of loneliness and malaise and the fading dreams that had become my life, for what better way to reverse the hierarchy of needs by dealing with a pressing problem at hand, a problem that can be solved immediately and with direct action without the need to wonder, overthink, and hope that your decisions lead to your wishes and desires being fulfilled? It was then I found myself in that old American of places in Arlington: a shopping mall, and outside, I was bereft to find that none of the chargers there actually worked. This put me in a foul mood. I sat on the side of the road wondering how I was going to get out of this pickle, in the haze of my cigar smoke and sweat, when suddenly, I saw this site on gMaps. It was strange that I hadn't seen it before, but I drove across the street, and lo and behold, 4-100% just as quick. (More likely, I lost track of time). It was super simple to set up and charge on. Now I wouldn't consider myself "stranded" in those American of towns, where everything was bigger, the cordiality was only surface deep, and the accents nestled into you like needling sunlight inside church windows… no, not stranded, just a perpetually passing visitor. My buddy doesn't need his car for another few weeks, so with my trusty charger nearby, I think this year, with world cup games just 10 minutes away, I will pass up on those European coastlines or those Canadian Rockies, and spend the next few weeks in Arlington, Texas, recharging.” — Bruce Crown, 2 months ago
