“The Massachusetts Fallen Heroes Memorial in Boston, dedicated in 2014, honors military personnel who have died since September 11, 2001. The memorial features a tall, slender, illuminated structure surrounded by flags and a water feature. Located in Boston, Massachusetts, it serves as a site for commemoration and vigils, especially near the anniversary of 9/11. It was the first memorial in the United States designed exclusively to honor members of the armed forces who died in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks. The project began in 2010 through the efforts of local veterans and Gold Star Families who sought to ensure that the sacrifice of their loved ones would not be forgotten. One of the co-founders of the Massachusetts Fallen Heroes organization, Sergeant First Class Eric Michael Emond, later died in combat in Afghanistan in 2018, becoming one of those honored at the memorial. The Beacon of Honor: The central structure is a 50-foot-tall (approximately 15 meters) reflective steel obelisk. It has five sides, each representing one of the branches of the United States Armed Forces. Next to the obelisk, vertical glass panels display the names of fallen Massachusetts service members in chronological order, detailing the location of their death if it occurred in combat.
