“The Electrify America EV charging station at the Walmart in Emporia, Virginia, is a convenient stop with a mix of fast-charging options, but a few issues prevent me from giving it a full five stars. First, the station has four stalls: two 150 kW stalls, one of which has a CHAdeMO plug, and two 350 kW stalls. While it’s great that they offer a variety of charging speeds and support for different vehicles, the reliability of the chargers is a concern. One of the 150 kW chargers, labeled as charger number four, was completely out of service during my visit, displaying a blue screen that looked like something out of an old DOS system. This kind of malfunction is frustrating, especially when you’re on a long trip and need every charger to be functional. Additionally, charger number two had a broken handle on one of its connectors. Fortunately, the secondary handle was still working, but it’s another sign that maintenance could be improved. On a positive note, the other chargers were working fine. I used one of the 350 kW stalls and was pleased to receive top charging speeds, as did a fellow EV6 driver charging alongside me. The CHAdeMO port was also functioning, which is good news for Nissan Leaf drivers. However, the cleanliness of the parking lot left much to be desired. It was pretty filthy, with trash scattered around the chargers. I made sure to dispose of my trash properly, but it was disappointing to see so much litter, likely left by fellow EV drivers. While some of it could be from non-EV users, the state of the area reflects poorly on the EV community. Overall, I’m giving this station three stars. The charging speeds and availability of multiple plug types are definite pluses, but the downtime of one charger and the broken handle on another, coupled with the poor cleanliness of the area, hold this station back from receiving a higher rating. Electrify America needs to address these reliability issues and ensure their stations are better maintained.” — John M (The Closer), 2 years ago
