So you pull off the highway and park in the lot of a closed restaurant. You plug in your car. You take a pee behind the building. You notice, then, that there is no one around. No cars pass on the Main Street. Nobody else is parked near. Across the street, there’s a laundromat that says OPEN. But it’s empty. The afternoon sun bathes the dark trees all around you. You get back in the car. You lock the doors. You check your next destination on your mobile phone. You look up. There’s a woman standing there. About six feet from your left headlight. She’s frozen in mid-walk, looking into the distance. Her clothes are black and dirty. Her pink hair is matted into a Mohawk. She looks young but then you see her face. Dirty, hollow, worn. Your breathing is deep and heavy. It looks like she’s deciding something. Then she walk a couple paces, looking over her shoulder at you. Then shuffled into the street. When you can no longer see her, you get out of your car. You unplug the charger. You start the car. You drive off. But your phone map takes you down a side street. And there she is.
