“I had deeply frustrating and unsafe charging experience on Saturday evening, February 7th in Philadelphia, PA I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia and was visiting my son in the city. The total trip should not exceed approximately 36 miles. I began the drive in my Kia EV9 with about 70 miles of range. By the time I reached the city, I had inexplicably used approximately 40 miles of range for an 18–16 mile drive, leaving me with only about 30 miles remaining. To avoid risking being stranded, I attempted to locate a charging station. I visited two ChargePoint locations, both of which were inaccessible and restricted to residents of the buildings where they were located. I was unable to charge at either location. Because I had a dinner reservation and was already running late, I had to stop searching for chargers and drove to the restaurant. After dinner, at approximately 6:30 p.m., I arrived at an Electrify America charging station with only 9 miles of range remaining. There were five vehicles ahead of me waiting to charge. Of the four chargers at this location, only three were operational; the fourth required repair. I remained in line for approximately FOUR hours in 4-degree weather, without access to warmth or shelter. As my battery level dropped, my car stopped providing heat altogether. I did not begin charging until approximately 10:45 p.m. I finally arrived home around 12:00 a.m., instead of the expected 7 p.m. In total, I spent nearly five hours waiting to charge and charging my vehicle. This experience was not only exhausting but physically unsafe. My hands and feet were numb from the cold. The frustration among other drivers was intense—multiple people stated they would never purchase an electric vehicle again after this experience. This level of infrastructure unreliability is unacceptable. Public charging should not involve hours-long waits in freezing temperatures, nor should drivers be forced to gamble on inaccessible or nonfunctional stations. This experience has seriously impacted my confidence in public EV charging and has made me reconsider purchasing another electric vehicle in the future.” — Larisa McShane, 7 months ago
